This is the second Behind the Scenes post about Earth80, the part of ULU 15mm Metaverse. Earth80 is near future alternative Earth in style of 80's sci-fi movies. In this post I am going to continue to choose 80's sci-fi movies with near future settings and share inspirational screenshots. Then I am gonna make terrain and convert 15mm miniatures for Earth80.

The second inspirational movie I am gonna to introduce is Running Man 1987 and you can find my previous post about Trancers (1985) here. Like in many 80's movies about near future, the world of tomorrow of Running Man look like our world in mid/late 80's but with futuristic elements.

Los Angeles in 2017. Huge skyscrapers of rich citizens and shanty town of poor citizens. Like in Trancers (1985), old Los Angeles was destroyed by earthquake.

Architecture of the future.

Law enforcements. Police pilots; Prison Guards with gas masks and armed either with Calico M100 Rifle or Colt Commando; Guards with vests and riot helmets, all armed with Aug Steyr.

Typical 80's style computer interfaces of the future.

Some futuristic vehicles.

And of course neon lights :)

I saw Prince Harry today! - part1

There is International Fleet Review 2013 in Sydney when more than 40 warships from different countries steamed to Sydney harbor. Prince Harry have arrived in Sydney to inspect the fleet and I was on Rocks today to watch airplane show at 2:15.

But the airshow was delayed for an hour and I noticed that more and more cops were coming to the harbor.

And then I saw royal escort. Prince Harry left his car, had a chat with Sydney fans, came on board of a small ship and steamed out of the harbor.  I was managed to catch Prince Harry arrival on cam, but I need to edit the video it first before sharing it on youtube.

Photos of royal escort after Prince Harry headed to his boat (sorry, no prince on these photos, you need to wait for the video.)

Prince Harry is leaving the harbor.

Soviet Filmstrips -Diaflims

Today I want to tell you about very old and interesting thing called Filmstrips.

The filmstrip was a common form of still image instructional multimedia, once commonly used for education or for entertainment, overtaken at the end of the eighties by VHS. In the early 1950s production companies started producing filmstrips for home entertainment. There were a number of films from Disney, and also from other manufacturers. You can read full Wikipedia article here.

In short, the "filmstrips" were illustrated stories that were projected on a canvas or wall. The sequence of images was printed on a perforated film strip and all frames were thematically linked to each other and are usually equipped with text.

In Soviet Union filmstrips were called Diafilms (Диафильм) and before introduction of VHS they were extremely popular among soviet people. Lots of Diafilms of different subjects and different genres were released: educational, fairy tales and even some sci-fi ones.

As for me, I haven't saw much Diafilms when I was a kid (I was born in 1984), and I remembered about them only two days ago, so now I am rediscovering Diaflims :)

Soviet Sci-Fi Diafilms in English translation?

Random frames from "Ninth Planet of Taya (1964)"

While discovering the joy of Soviet Diaflims (Filmstrips), I found that some of sci-fi genre filmstrips were produced from 60's to 80's. As for me, who was born in the end of Soviet era, grew up in Modern Russia and now live in Australia for 6 years, I found that old Soviet Sci-Fi was very unique.

So I thought that some of you may be interested if I translate these old Diafilms into English language? I doubt if any of these diafilms were released outside the Iron Curtain, so it will be interesting journey to see the future  through the eyes of soviets :)

If you are interested, PLEASE LEAVE YOUR COMMENTS and I will create a new "Soviet Diafilm Blog" :)

I will try my best with translation, and I don't think it will be very hard, because most of diafilms use simple language. And please, if you'll find any mistakes in my translation (English is my second language), just add your comments in my future Diafilm related posts.

Test of Soviet Diafilm translation :)

While waiting for your comments and opinion on my possible English translation of science fiction Diafilms (Filmstrips) from Soviet Union, I decided to make a sample translation of third frame from "Ninth planet of Teya (1980)".

Here you can see an original and a translated frame. To keep the feel of Russian Cyrillic font (pretty simple and boring font in my opinion, but it is the widest used font in Russia), I choosed regular Arial font. As you can see sentences in English language are much shorter than in Russian.

I am proud to show you 15mm Swedish S-Tank or The Stridsvagn 103, that I finished at the beginning of December, but because of Christmas and New Year I found time to post it only now :)

There should be a cupola MG, but I haven't unified this element yet. There are be 15 parts (actually its 14 unique parts, because two headlights are identical, so there should be be 14 parts on mold and 15 parts in a pack (I need to unify Machine Gun))

Made Kurganets-40 APC for Armies Army :)

Just made Kurganets-40 APC for Russian Empire faction of Armies Army :) This is 3D model suitable for printing and casting in resin and metal.

In the Future Russian Empire faction took Kurganets-25 vehicle and made heavy modification by adding new armor, weapons and systems. APC and MGS variants have fully automated turrets.

Kurganets-25 is a REAL WORLD ultra modern prototype vehicle that is currently in development by Russian Federation to replace BMP fleet somewhere in 2015-2016 . So the idea with Russian Empire design is not to base their vehicles on real world Soviet designs, but on prototype Russian designs. That way RUSK and Russian Empire vehicles will look Russian but different.

All 4 roofs variants are separate and removable.

Bogatyr - heavy tank of Russian Empire

Just finished Bogatyr heavy tank for Armies Army. Bogatyr is an epic hero from Slavic legends, similar to knight-errant.

The Bogatyr is a heavy armored tank of Russian Empire. It has a crew of 3 and armed with heavy gun located in automated unmanned turret + 2 remote controlled machine guns (same type as on Kurganets-40 MGS). Engine is located at front, crew in middle section and auto-loader in rear section. Like modern Israeli Merkava tank, Bogatyr have armored door at rear part of the hull to load the ammunition. By removing some of the ammo it is possible for Bogatyr to carry up to 5 passengers.

Repainting Giganto the Mole monster

I bought a huge heroclix figure of Giganto on ebay and decided to repaint it to make a collectable figure. I almost finished the head and chest of a monster and decided to share a photo.

I washed head, chest and shoulder of a monster with green Citadel wash, heavy dybrushed it with Goblin Green then light drybrushed it with Camo Green and after that I used Goblin Green to manually paint facial features with Camo Green, Bubonic Brown, Red Gore and Blood Red.

For those who don't know who is Giganto, I decided to share this Marvel Wiki link. The Giganto first appeared in Fantastic Four issue 1. He is one of many Deviant dwelling on Monster Isle. The Mole Man made him his servant and used him to attack atomic power plants all over the world.
On the picture above you can see how Giganto looks in comics.

And on this picture from Google you can see how this figure looked before I stared repainting it.

Heroclix Repaint

I recently discovered that Heroclix gaming figures of 4cm height are very well sculpted. However, the factory painting is very basic and flat. So I decided to get some of those figures on eBay, repaint and re-base them to make them collectable ones.

Click on photos to enlarge them!

The first figure I wanted to share is Magneto from X-Men comic series. As you can see, I removed the figure from its base and repainted it COMPLETELY with high attention to details. I manually added all highlights and shadings using different paints and washers. For example I used 4 shades of purple for Magneto's cloak and 3 shades of red for his clothing. After that I sprayed the figure with Vallejo matt varnish and glued it to a custom made clear acrylic base from LITKO.

The second figure I wanted to share is Colossus or Piotr Rasputin from X-Men series. I decided to use gloss varnish for his metal skin.

Click on photo to enlarge it

And the last figure for today is Riddler from Batman comics. As you can see on a photo below, the figure had very basic and flat colours before I repainted it. And it was a little difficult to cut him from a base while trying not to damage the money bags.
